Description

The act of consecration of the church of Sant Andreu del Tona Castle, dated 889 and signed by Bishop Gotmar de Vic, is an exceptional Carolingian document and the oldest preserved in the Library of Catalonia. This scroll is a direct witness to the territorial and ecclesiastical organization of early medieval Catalonia, organized around parishes and castle grounds. At a time of consolidation of feudal power and the Christianization of the territory, the text reflects the Frankish influence in the formation of Catalan political and religious structures. Its writing in Latin and its diplomatic format place it within the European documentary tradition of the time. This document not only has incalculable heritage value, but also connects us to the origins of Catalan identity within the framework of medieval European culture.
