The medieval fairs of the Pyrenees and border towns were characterized by a great permeability and mobility of merchants and businessmen on both sides of the Pyrenees, a characteristic that remained until the creation of the “modern” border, especially from the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) which meant the beginning of the imposition of prohibitions and tariffs. The importance of these fairs on a local and regional scale meant that the towns tried to get different annual dates, either as a fair or as a “tornafira” or “refira”, in order to take advantage of the long-distance trips to and fro by Transpyrene merchants.
