The Ebre River was, prior to the deployment of the road and railway network in the Terres de l’Ebre, at the end of the 19th century, the great communications hub that connected the interior of the peninsula with the Mediterranean and Europe, and which was used to transport cereals, but also other raw materials, such as the coal extracted from the mining basins of southern Aragon.
