\nThe Barcelona People’s Olympics (July 19 to 26, 1936), also known as the People’s Week of Sport and Folklore, was intended to be an anti-fascist response to the Berlin Olympics of 1936. They were not held because of General Franco’s military uprising against the legitimate republican government. His goal was to recover the true Olympic spirit, peace and solidarity between nations, all of which, precisely, was being denied in the organization of the Berlin Games with the complicity of the IOC. The total number of registered athletes was more than 5,000, with the largest foreign delegation being that of France, with 1,500 athletes.
